02 may 2009 - India's Taj Mahal
One of India’s most famous tourist attraction is the Taj Mahal, located in Agra. It is a mausoleum built by the emperor Shah Jahan, in memory of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Building began around 1632 and was completed by 1653.

It is a fine example of Mughal architecture with a combination of Persian, Ottoman, Indian and Islamic architect. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

The main focus of the Taj Mahal is the tomb, made of white marble. This stands on a square plinth with an arch-shaped doorway and topped by a large dome.
The Taj Mahal is set in a beautiful 300 meter square Mughal garden. This consists of raised pathways dividing the garden into four with 16 sunken flowerbeds. At the center is a raised marble water tank, named ‘al Hawd al-Kawthar’ it is a reference to “Tank of Abundance” as promised to Muhammad. A reflecting pool on North-South axis reflects the inage of the Taj Mahal. There are also a variety of trees and fountains elsewhere in the garden.

With its 2 to 4 million visitors annually this is a popular Indian attraction. The best time to visit is October through to February when it is cooler.
